The last two centuries of human activity in Antarctica has seen a rapid evolution from discovery to exploitation; heroic exploration and a geopolitical arms race for sovereignty and today through international scientific programmes and questions of global sustainability. Today, Antarctica is at the leading edge of our understanding of our planet and its future.
The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is the UK’s foremost polar organisation concerned with the custodianship of Britain’s heritage in Antarctica and using that heritage to engage a global audience with this important and fascinating place on our planet.
Camilla Nichol is the CEO of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust with responsibility for the conservation of six historic bases on the Antarctic Peninsula, including Port Lockroy. In this lecture she will briefly explore the past two hundred years of human activity in Antarctica – and the unique place Antarctica has on the global stage. She will also offer insight into the challenges of caring for such remote heritage including a unique collaboration with ARU; and how the protection of these extraordinary places might be used to help us all better understand, value and protect Antarctica for the future.
The event will be open to all audiences online below:
