Workshops for parents to be booked at Whipps Cross Hospital Only

Expressing your milk before baby arrives

Most beneficial for mothers (partners welcome) at around 34-38 weeks gestation

The importance of exclusive breastfeeding for all babies has been well-established by scientific research.

Colostrum contains vital immunological properties and helps to colonise the baby’s gut with healthy bacteria that protect against allergy and disease. It also contains the perfect balance of proteins, fats and micronutrients needed for human babies as well as acting as a laxative to help the passing of the first tarry meconium stools.

Some babies may experience difficulties with feeding or maintaining their blood sugar levels during the first few days after birth and therefore may require supplementary feeds. For some mothers, it can be a useful tool that helps ensure their baby will start life without the need for artificial supplementation.

This is especially beneficial for the following situations:

  • For women with certain medical conditions or medications: (diabetes, on regular beta blockers, metabolic disorders - such as thyroid condition)
  • For babies who will be born preterm/ have a known medical condition that may affect feeding or are likely to be admitted to the neonatal unit
  • Babies who have been diagnosed with intrauterine growth restriction/small for gestational age, expected to be under 2.5kg
  • Twins/triplets
  • Elective caesarean birth

Workshop will include;

  • Why colostrum harvesting is one of the best ways to prepare for breastfeeding
  • Tips on expressing colostrum prior to birth
  • How to store and bring to the hospital
