Event description

Description

NHS Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Screening Programme Antenatal Screening Laboratory Update Day - Leeds 17th April 2018

The laboratory update day is aimed at “bench level” staff, haematology laboratory managers, and haematologists (who are relatively new to haemoglobinopathy screening). Ideally, staff work on a regular basis within the haematology/haemoglobinopathy setting.

Please note that only 2 delegates from the same Trust can be booked to attend each Update Day. If there are extenuating circumstances where this rule should not apply, please contact Cynthia.Gill@phe.gov.uk AND Jessamy.Willson-Pepper@phe.gov.uk to discuss the reason for your additional requirements.

Attendance is free for laboratory staff working in NHS Hospitals in England. Laboratory personnel working in other UK countries or in a Private/non NHS Hospital must contact the organisers for further details: Cynthia.Gill@phe.gov.uk or Jessamy.Willson-Pepper@phe.gov.uk

Objectives

The objectives of the day are to

  1. Update laboratory staff who work in haematology/haemoglobinopathies about current guidance and recommendations from the programme centre
  2. Introduce relevant case studies in workshops where chromatograms from a range of technologies can be discussed. There are 2 workshop groups (a) Beginners for those unfamiliar with reading haemoglobinopathy chromatograms AND (b) Advanced for those who are familiar with reading haemoglobinopathy chromatograms and interpreting results

The day will include the following topics:

  • Programme update
  • Feedback from Laboratory Support Service - Oxford
  • UK NEQAS update
  • Interactive case study workshops
  • Open Forum
  • Clinical Talk on Thalassaemias

The full Programme of the Update Day will be distributed by 6th April 2018.
