Description

Anthropology Scotland 2019 at the National Museum of Scotland

Anthropology is the comparative study of humankind throughout the world. Discover more in a day of workshops and talks with students and staff from Scottish universities and National Museums Scotland. There will be a series of fun, interactive workshops with anthropologists working in universities and museums. The day will include the opportunity to talk to lecturers from the Universities of Aberdeen and Edinburgh. In addition, there will be a wealth of information about studying anthropology at university. Groups welcome. Students should be accompanied by a teacher or parent.

The following workshops will be available for students to pick on the day. Each student will have time to do two workshops:

The Stuff of Life: Anthropology in the Museum - participants will be encouraged to question the relationships people have with the material world. How do things shape our lives? What is it about stuff that inspires us? For this workshop, please bring an object that reminds you of your own country, or a country you have visited.

We Are Family: A Kinship Activity - discover a slice of the world Kinlandia where a young bride, Millicent, is getting ready to marry. With competition, money, social status, pugs (yes, pugs!) and family reputation at stake, come learn a bit about kinship in anthropology and help Millicent and the other families set up a perfect match!

Observing the city: Many of us live in cities. Explore what ‘fieldwork’ – the way that anthropologists collect information - looks like to an anthropologist working in a city.

Anthropology, humans and other animals: What is the difference between a human and an animal? In this workshop we examine how anthropologists understand animals, and human relationships with animals.

Poetry, politics and anthropology: Express yourself, through poetry! Students will be asked to pick a political theme, gender, race, Brexit, food, and with the help of two anthropologists explore this through writing poems.

Culture Game: Students are put in the position of anthropologists in the field, figuring out how to talk to people from a totally different culture. This exercise in understanding and misunderstanding lies at the heart of what anthropologists do every day (and it’s fun).
