There has recently been a rise in the number of anti-semitic incidents at football matches as reported by Kick It Out, the anti-racism and anti-discrimination organisation. Many specfic incidents have also been widely reported in the media, for example in the run-up to the 2015 Capital One Cup Final between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. One of Britiain’s most influential sport journalists, Henry Winter, has recently discussed the challenges of addressing the problem in The Times newspaper.
Jonathan Metliss has enjoyed a long career as a City of London lawyer. During that time he has also been involved in a number of sport-related businesses; for example he was a director of ENIC who held a controlling interest in many major football clubs notably Tottenham Hotspur. Jonathan has also been a long-time anti-discrimination/anti-racism in football activist, and for many years was a member of football’s anti-racism body Kick It Out; and is Chairman of Action against Discrimination (AAD) a charity which he established to combat racism in football. In this seminar Jonathan, drawing on the dicussions at a recent debate organised by AAD in which leading figures in the football industrydebated the issue of anti-semitisim in football, discusses a critical question:
Anti-Semitism – how serious is it now?
