Event description

Description

ReThinkX and the MCR Global Health Society are pleased to present our third event of the 2017-18 academic year, we’re revisiting an issue we explored last year that threatens every person on the planet, and transcends cultural and socioeconomic boundaries: Antibiotic Resistance.

In the last century, humankind has gone from haphazardly discovering penicillin, to a global dependence on antibiotics to combat infections. 200 years ago, a simple skin or tooth infection could have spelt disaster for healthy or vulnerable people alike. Now, through tireless development of new drugs, we are able to fight even the most severe and hard to reach afflictions, often with a simple pill, cream, or infusion.

Unfortunately, our over-willingness to prescribe and misuse these drugs has consequences. In an arms race as old as life, many bacteria have evolved immunity to a vast range of antibiotics, and their ability to bypass our defenses is outpacing our development of new ones.

Could we be entering a post-antibiotics age?

Attendance, as with all ReThinkX and MCR Global Health Society events is entirely free, and tickets are available from the link above.
