Antica Casa Vinicola Scarpa was founded in 1854 and are one of the most historic producers in Piemonte. The cantina itself is in Nizza Monferrato, the estate vineyard in Castel Rochero. It covers 50 hectares, 27 of which are under vine. The majority of this is comprised of Barbera, but they also grow Dolcetto, Ruche and Freisa and Brachetto. The rest is deliberately left to other flora such as trees and truffles to increase biodiversity.
They also make Barolo and Barbaresco and have been doing so long before these names were drawn up. Today they are the only producer outside these appellations who are permitted to make them, simply because they have been doing so for so long. Winemaking has remained largely unchanged since Mario Pesce’s helm in the 1960s, when he brought critical acclaim to Scarpa and the wider region. The Zola family is the current owner, taking over from Mario in 2001 and they continue to work with Carlo Castino who has clocked up over 50 vintages at Scarpa.
