Event description

Description

Explore the fascinating history of handmade antique lace with an antique textiles specialist.

We meet at the historic Victoria and Albert Museum, where I will take you on a tour around selected galleries, focusing on antique lace, whitework, costume, portraits, and objects that relate to lace and its place within the culture of each age. During the tour I will give a brief introduction to the history of lace, using these objects to illustrate the various techniques of lace making, where and when it was made, and for whom. The talk is suitable for both beginners and enthusiasts.

After the tour we move on to a cafe for tea (or coffee), where we can enjoy a relaxing chat whilst I hand around items of antique lace from my personal collection, for you to examine and enjoy. A large quantity of handmade (and a few machine made) laces dating from the 17th to 20th centuries will be included.

I have over 25 years experience of selling antique laces (particularly Victorian lace and accessories), plus other textiles, in markets (including many years in London's famous Portobello Road market), major antiques fairs, and centres in the U.K as well as abroad (in Japan for instance). I enjoy chatting about lace and would love to share my love of the subject with you, showing you some of my personal collection of intricate handmade laces.

A cup of tea or coffee is included in the price. Entry to the museum is free.

I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon at the V&A. Ann is extremely knowledgeable about her subject, putting it into time and place without giving a dry history lesson as she relates it in an easygoing, humorous manner. There is much to see all within the wonderful setting of the museum. After the tour, tea was supplied nearby, where Ann opened her Mary Poppins bag to show and discuss part of her personal collection of lace. Fabulous stuff, all of it! Thank you Ann for a memorable afternoon which I would recommend to anyone whether a lace collector or not!
