Part 1 of 6: The challenge of seeing the racial and/or cultural Other in therapy - Mamood Ahmad (UKCP Psychotherapist)

About this event

Part 1: The challenge of seeing the racial and/or cultural Other in therapy (2-hour) with Mamood Ahmad (UKCP Reg)

This is Part 1 of a 6-part Series

“If you can’t see me through my race and culture then you don’t see me. And if you don’t see me then you don’t see how I see you.” ~ Unknown

Please note this training is for trainees and qualified therapists as well as mental health professionals in the UK.

This session will orient you to the core tenets and journey of becoming an antiracist and culture-aware therapist, and ask both individually and collectively: what will you need to do to “see” clients who are racially and/or culturally diverse to you?

We will explore the contextual themes which shape racio-cultural "otherness" such as power relations, systemic and indirect discrimination, racio-cultural identity crisis, and lived-in experiences for client groups whose house is structured differently to your own with its own epistemological frame of reference.

We hope to kickstart your reflective process so you can make the leap towards racio-cultural anti-discriminatory practice.

About Antiracist: Race Aware 6-part programme

You can find a full description of the programme here:

This Antiracism and culture core competence training is for all counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health professions. The training is self-certified as being compliant to the following standards.

• Antiracism and culture core competence framework for therapists (A4CT)

• BAME Positive Practice Guide (BABCP) including IAPT

Further details about this programme:

Training consists of six parts (24 hours live training) and follows an antiracist growth model of racio-cultural development which will be presented in the first part of training. The focus is on experiential learning, case studies, group encounter, race and culture dialogue, interactive reflection, and role play. After completing Part 6 there will be an optional short (choice of verbal or written) assessment to declare “Race Aware” competence to enable clients to find antiracist therapists. It is recommended you follow the modules in sequence, however, you may elect the modules you wish to participate in or not and any order. Part 1 must always be completed first.

Mamood Ahmad is a UKCP registered clinical psychotherapist, workplace speaker on mental health and therapy, and upcoming author of ‘AntiRacist Counselling: Becoming & Being’ (Provisional title) If you have any feedback, please send it to
