Navigating Medical Education in the UK: A Hospital and University Perspective for IMGs

This InSights webinar will be presented by Dr Jhiamluka Solano, Cardiology Registrar, Scunthorpe General Hospital, Academy of Medical Educator, Royal College of Physicians and Dr Enjy Abouzeid, PBL & Deputy year lead, School of Medicine, Lecturer of Medical Education, School of Medicine, Ulster University. They will be bringing their expertise and experiences from a hospital-based and university-based perspective.

Join us for an engaging webinar tailored for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) exploring careers in medical education in the UK. Hear from two experienced IMGs as they share their unique journeys, one from a hospital-based role, the other from academia. Learn about career pathways, key qualifications, and practical steps to get started in teaching, mentorship, and research. Through interactive polls, breakout discussions, and expert insights, this session offers inspiration, guidance, and actionable tips to help you navigate and thrive in the UK medical education landscape. Ideal for early-career clinicians and aspiring educators.

Learning Objectives

• Compare career progression pathways in clinical versus academic medical education settings, including qualifications and professional development options (e.g., PGCert, FHEA, AoME).
• Identify common challenges IMGs face when entering the medical education field, as discussed by the speakers and peers.
• Describe at least two key differences between hospital-based and university-based medical education careers in the UK, with specific relevance to IMGs.
• Identify actions, with at least one concrete step, to initiate or advance their involvement in medical education, based on shared strategies and speaker guidance.
• Engage in peer discussion and collaborative reflection to generate practical ideas for overcoming barriers to entry in medical education roles.
