Westinghouse proudly brings our experience developing and implementing new nuclear technologies, and over 75 years of British research, engineering, and manufacturing excellence centered at Westinghouse’s Springfields UK facility, to enable reliable, clean, safe and economical sources of energy for generations to come.

The Westinghouse AP1000® reactor is already proving itself every day around the globe. Currently, four units utilizing AP1000 technology are operating in China, setting performance records. Six more are under construction in China and one AP1000 reactor is operating at Plant Vogtle in Georgia while a second nears completion.

The AP300 SMR leverages that operating experience, as well as tens of millions of hours on AP1000 reactor development. It has the benefits of record-setting Westinghouse AP1000 PWR technology in a smaller power output to augment the backbone of any community’s energy system.

The AP300 SMR complements the AP1000 reactor for a cleaner energy mix, energy security, and grid flexibility and stabilization.

Dr. Rita Baranwal, Senior Vice President, AP300™ Small Modular Reactor, Westinghouse Electric Company

As Senior Vice President, Dr. Rita Baranwal leads development and deployment of the AP300™ Small Modular Reactor (SMR). She has over 25 years of nuclear industry experience and has held this role since May 2023.

Prior to this role, Dr. Baranwal was Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Digital and Innovation at Westinghouse where she led the clean energy company’s global research and development investments and spearheaded a technology strategy to advance the company’s innovative nuclear solutions.

Dr. Baranwal previously held a number of roles including Chief Nuclear Officer and Vice President of Nuclear at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Assistant Secretary for the Office of Nuclear Energy in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), directed the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) initiative at Idaho National Laboratory and Director of Technology Development & Application at Westinghouse.

Dr. Baranwal has a bachelor’s degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in materials science and engineering and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in the same discipline from the University of Michigan.
