Bio (Dr Kelly Thornber)

Kelly is Co-Director of the Pharma Pollution Hub and a Research Fellow in Sustainable Development. She is based at both Biosciences (Streatham) and the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (Penryn). Her work uses systems thinking and public engagement methods to develop pragmatic solutions for addressing the complex issues of pharmaceutical pollution and antimicrobial resistance in aquatic environments.

The Pharma Pollution Hub: finding solutions to reduce the environmental impact of medicines used in UK healthcare

Abstract (Dr Kelly Thornber)

The Pharma Pollution Hub is a new independent think tank based at the University of Exeter. We bring together thought leaders from across academia, industry, government and the civil sector, to co-develop solutions for reducing the environmental impact of medicines used in UK healthcare, through a systems thinking and engaged research approach. Our work spans the whole of the pharmaceutical life cycle, including population health and culture, pharmaceutical design and manufacture, healthcare decision-making and use, and environmental monitoring and management. In this talk, I will introduce the problem of pharmaceutical pollution, why we need a systems approach to identifying and implementing solutions, and how the Pharma Pollution Hub is helping to make this happen.

Bio (Dr Ian Porter)

Ian is a researcher based within APEx (Exeter Collaboration for Academic Primary Care) at St Luke’s Campus. He currently works on a project funded by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) involving the development and implementation of the International Survey of People Living with Chronic Conditions (PaRIS survey). Previously he worked on a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded programme of work developing and piloting methods for the routine use of Patient Recorded Outcome Measures (PROMs) in primary care for patients with multiple, long-term conditions. Prior to this, he contributed to a number of other primary care-focused projects involving socially marginalised groups with complex physical and mental health needs.

The OECD International Survey of People Living with Chronic Conditions (PaRIS survey): development and evaluation of the patient questionnaire

In view of growing populations with chronic conditions, many countries are redesigning their health systems. However, little information is available on how health systems perform from the perspective of people with chronic conditions. In 2017 Health Ministers of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Member countries mandated the OECD to develop comparable cross-country indicators for patients’ experiences of medical care and their self-reported health care outcomes. This presentation reports on the development of a questionnaire for adults (aged 45 or older) with one or more chronic conditions who use primary/ambulatory care, along with the field trial evaluation across 18 countries.
