APG Strategy Conference 2018

On the Contrary | The power of contrarian thinking to sharpen strategy and inspire creative

Monday 8th October 2018

We’re interested in challenge and how it creates change. Great ideas and great campaigns seldom come from conforming to the established order. They are inspired by iconoclasts who challenge convention and insist on new thinking, often in the face of considerable resistance.

I’m not sure there’s a collective noun for a group of contrarians, but we’ve invited a ‘dispute’ of them to join us on the 8th October at the Royal Institution (itself a home for great, contrarian scientific thinking) to challenge us and make us think.

Some are familiar names from our world of strategy and planning; others are big name contrarians in their own field of excellence. People who have gone against the grain and are administering an electric shock to a way of thinking or seeing the world and are changing things permanently as a result.

They help us look at the same ideas, the same sets of data and the same view of the world and see something different. It’s all about making strategy freer, bolder and more creative

So we’re celebrating iconoclasm and we’ve invited a clutch of fascinating speakers to help us discover more about the life and actions of the contrarian and the implications of contrarian thinking.

Come join them from 10am to 4pm on 8th October. We’ll be running from 10am to 4pm after which you can limp away exhausted and embattled for a large drink. And a spat.

The Speakers include:

  • Mark Ritson | Adjunct Professor of Marketing at Melbourne Business School

  • Professor Nick Chater | Professor of Behavioural Science at Warwick Business School

  • Professor Ruth Morgan | Professor of Crime and Forensic Science at UCL

  • Clive Stafford Smith | Human Rights Lawyer and Director at Reprieve UK

  • Martin Weigel | Head of Plannning at Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam

  • Margaret Heffernan | Author and Speaker
