Event description

Description

Learn how to prune and care for your apple trees.

The apple tree is a staple for many of us in Surrey. Whether it is a single cherished Bramley in the back garden or a multi-variety apple orchard, care must be given to the management of these fruit producing trees.

Join tutor Paul Ritchie in learning the best ways to time your pruning, physically trim your trees to conserve their appearance and ensure you get optimal fruit production whilst prolonging their life. We will be using a Surrey Wildlife Trust apple orchard near Guildford to demonstrate these skills.

All tools and safety equipment will be provided, however it is recommended that you wear sturdy walking boots and all weather clothing.

Tutor profile - Paul Ritchie

As a Biologist with over 20 years of experience looking after nature reserves and commons, Paul is well placed to teach courses in ecology, conservation and practical countryside skills. He had roles training employees and volunteers with the Metropolitan Police Service, City of London Corporation and Surrey Wildlife Trust.

Before recently retiring from SWT, Paul was the Community Learning Coordinator for Surrey Wildlife Trust working with colleagues and external tutors to plan and deliver a wide range of scientific, practical skills and art courses for adults. Paul has complemented his prior experience as an associate lecturer for the University of Surrey by completing a PTLLS course at East Surrey College.
