Event Details

Hosted by the University of Nottingham’s Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics and Linguistic Profiling for Professionals, this free event brings together academics and workplace practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to explore how language and communication research (within and beyond linguistics) can be of applied practical value to the communicative practices of people working in a wide range of real-world workplace settings.  The day will comprise a series of panels, followed by an inaugural lecture, exploring what has been achieved so far and what needs to be the focus for future development, addressing three key themes where applied linguistics research on professional communication has made major contributions:

Communication and Leadership at Work
Effective Healthcare Communication
The Sociolinguistics of Work

Confirmed speakers include:

Dr. Zsófia Demjén, University College London

Prof. Michael Handford, Cardiff University

Dr. Claire Mann, University of Nottingham

Dr. Stephanie Schnurr, University of Warwick

Dr. Dimitra Vladimirou, University of Nottingham

Susannah Fish OBE, QPM, Starfish Consultancy and Former Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police

The sympsium will close with Professor Mullany's inaugural lecture:

Sociolinguistic Futures: Identity, Equality and Human Rights

The day will also consist of a poster session where attendees can learn about the latest professional communication research being undertaken at the University of Nottingham and a launch of a new suite of professional communication courses from Linguistic Profiling for Professionals and the School of English at the University of Nottingham. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and the inaugural lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
