Applied science fiction: opening the future to our collective imagination
Overview
Join RSA fellows, Dr Christine Aicardi and Stephen Oram, to talk about their practice-based research and reflect on the use of applied science fiction for anticipating the sociotechnical and ethical challenges of future technologies.
As a case study of the insights which this creative approach can yield, they will discuss the findings and insights that came from a 3-year project (2021-2024) led by King’s College London. This important project piloted the development of an AI-driven tool for analysing expressed emotion in parental speech, aimed at improving the prediction of youth mental health problems.
This session will share Dr Christine Aicardi and Stephen Oram’s extensive experience and open discussion on how this emerging multidisciplinary field can be used more widely. This creative approach can provide new understanding and strategies for all those involved in thinking about, building capacity for, and trying to weigh collectively on pathways for the future within their own projects.
