Research Methods in Literature Review

This course aims to doctoral and postdoctoral researchers a sound understanding of the literature review process. Examples are taken from many different disciplines and will be relevnt to all researchers, regardless of academic field. Topics include – what is a literature review; searching for literature; evaluation of the literature; writing up your review.

The online course duration is estimated to be 3 hours (see page 2 for unit details); in addition you can engage in portfolio activities. These portfolio activities are in the ‘portfolio activity pods’ which are located on the right hand side of the screen, within the online self-study course. They provide an opportunity for you to research and reflect further and to relate the topic of a screen to your own context. They can be completed independently and in this course have an estimated duration of 8 hours and 30 mins.

Completing this course will help you to:

Understand why a literature review is important

Understand the structure and process of undertaking a literature review

Understand the importance of identifying a review question to guide your literature review

Develop your ability to identify different types of literature and work out if they are useful to you

Develop your ability to search for literature

Develop your ability to evaluate and select the relevant literature for your review

Understand how to write up your literature review.

Assessing Your Learning

The learning outcome quiz at the beginning and end of the course will allow you to assess your learning and the impact of the course.

The end of course multiple choice quiz tests completion of the course and understanding. A certificate and credits are points are awarded if a mark of greater than 80% is achieved.

How to Apply for Access

The Graduate School has purchased this course from Epigeum and there is a fixed number of licences. Once that is expended access to the course will close. If you want to access this course and gain credit/certification you must apply to the Graduate School by completing the Eventbrite application form. You will receive notification of the outcome of your application within one week and if your application is successful and you will receive an email providing access codes which will enable you to log in to the Epigeum online learning website to complete your course.
