APPRECIATIVE INQUIRY FOUNDATIONS WORKSHOP - theory, practice and application

Nottingham, UK 20-24 January 2020

Mette Jacobsgaard & Barbara Sloan

What is Appreciative Inquiry?

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a way to create positive change in any human system. You can use AI to discover, expand and sustain what makes human relationships and an organisation successful.

It’s an approach in organisational change and development grown from theories on social constructionism and how we can use them to transform our organisation.

You can use AI in any size of company but it’s really useful in complex environments and situations. For example culture transformation, restructuring, mergers, acquisitions, creating and evaluating programmes, strategic planning and relationships such as union/management relationship, teambuilding, conflict and capacity building. And it’s a powerful way for managers to become true leaders.

Your Appreciative Inquiry workshop

This workshop is for anyone who wants to get a solid grounding in the theory and practice of Appreciative Inquiry. You might be a manager, HR professional, facilitator or consultant.

We’ve developed this workshop over the last 20 years, using an experience-based model that gives you the skills to work as a consultant with clients or as a manager working on change.

AI is more than a technique; it’s a totally different way to facilitate change. We’ll use examples from small and large organisations from across the world so you can see its practical application.

What you’ll learn

  • You’ll cover the theory and practice of Appreciative Inquiry, including principles and research.

  • We’ll look at the power of positive questions and how inquiry and change happen at the same time.

  • We’ll explore the stories and metaphors of transformation and how to deal with peoples’ tendency to focus on problems.

  • You’ll find out how to create change in any kind of organisation.

  • You’ll learn how to build an organisations ability to meet challenges.

  • We’ll share the tools you’ll need to apply AI.

  • You’ll practise identifying appreciative topics, constructing questions, interviewing skills, visions that work and translating them into innovative processes. We’ll look at best practice, roles and structures to keep change going.

  • We'll look at examples of real life Appreciative Inquiry consulting projects.

  • You’ll learn how to apply the AI framework for strategic planning, internal auditing, organisational redesign, mergers, teambuilding, creating and evaluating programmes and diversity.
