Join Sarah Hunt, Key Sector Manager in Life and Chemical Sciences for Skills Development Scotland as she shares key information and advice about STEM apprenticeships in Scotland including the different types available. She will also be joined by Scottish apprentices who will share their experiences. This session will be useful for any students who might be considering applying for apprenticeships.


Sarah Hunt has over 13 years' experience within economic development and skills planning beginning her career as an economic and social research consultant developing skills strategies, programme evaluations, business cases/plans, feasibility studies, and options appraisals throughout the UK. Sarah joined SDS in 2017 as a Key Sector Development Executive supporting skills planning activities across sectoral, regional, and thematic areas including SDS's No Deal Brexit Scenario Planning. Sarah was promoted in 2021 to Key Sector Manager for Life and Chemical Sciences and is responsible for informing and influencing Scotland's education provision to align with industry need. Sarah formed the Life and Chemical Sciences Skills Group which has a remit to provide strategic direction for the implementation of evidence-based skills interventions. She also represents the skills agenda on various national and sectoral groups including the Life Sciences Industry Leadership Group and Scottish Bioeconomy Council. Sarah mentors a young person via MCR Pathways.


Thomas Hatfield is an engineering graduate apprentices started his position in August 2024. Originally from Glasgow, he studied Microbiology at University of Aberdeen, before signing on as a graduate apprentice 12 months after graduating.


Jack Kay is a Senior Scientist in the Molecular Biology Department at the Scottish Biotechnology company Ingenza Ltd. where he has worked for the past 13 years since leaving high school in Musselburgh in 2012. After securing an apprenticeship position with Ingenza, he continued his studies in parallel with work to achieve his BSc in Chemistry at Heriot-Watt University in 2020. Recently Jack completed his PhD with the University of Plymouth studying and contributing to what is known about a class of proteins called Bacteriocins, which can be used to treat potentially deadly antimicrobial resistant infections. Outside of work Jack enjoys hiking in the Pentland hills and occasionally further North, bouldering, and software development.
