About this Event
The Refugee Council is the leading UK charity working with separated children seeking asylum. We have provided advice and support to these children as well as to those caring for them for over two decades. We deliver bespoke training on this subject matter to a range of professionals. Our trainers have extensive up-to-date knowledge and front-line experience of this work which ensures that our courses are dynamic, relevant and engaging. Course suitability
Professionals working with separated children and those wishing to volunteer as an appropriate adult in age-assessments.
Course Overview
A child or young person undergoing an age assessment have the right to have an appropriate adult present with them during the interviews. The course outlines the role of an appropriate adult in the age-assessment, framing it within the broader asylum process and exploring the relations with the other professionals involved.
Aims and objectives
By completing this course participants will have a practical understanding of:
- What is an appropriate adult and The Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) guidance
- What makes a lawful assessment
- Before and after assessment meetings
- Case studies
- Decisions and challenges
Course Format
2 hours interactive training on Zoom.
Participants won't need a Zoom account to join the training. Zoom log in details will be available in the "Online event page" section as soon the ticket purchase process is completed.

- A pen and paper
- A working microphone and camera (built-in in most laptops and smartphones)
- Electronic resources pack (sent via email)
Notes
Special rate tickets for members of Refugee Community Organisations (RCOs) are available. Please contact the Training Team on training@refugeecouncil.org.uk to enquire about RCO tickets eligibility
Please be Advised
- To qualify for certification you should have your camera on and/or participate fully in the training
- If you arrive more than half an hour late you may be refused admission
- If you need to leave the training for a work emergency, you may not be re-admitted
- If you are having technical difficulty joining the training please contact us on 07909 251 641 or training@refugeecouncil.org.uk within the first 10 minutes of the training so that we can support you joining the session
You will not be eligible for a refund for any of the above scenarios or personal illness on the day.
