COURSE INFO

Death and Dying: A Buddhist Perspective

We are alive, therefore we will die. This is the simplest, most obvious truth of our existence, yet very few of us have really come to terms with this fact. Buddha gave extensive teachings on the death process, and on how to use an awareness of our death to live a more full and meaningful life. The morning sessions will focus on Buddhist psychology and philosophy about death and dying as well as practical ways to help the dying that easily integrate into modern life.

The afternoon session will focus on more traditional ritual practices performed for those who have died. This is called Powa practice or “transference of consciousness”. The practice of Powa is a method whereby we can transfer the consciousness of those who have recently died, or our own consciousness, to a pure land. Powa practice explains clearly how we can face our own death, and how we can help those who are dying. This is one of the kindest things we can do for ourself and for others.
