About the Author
Imam Abu Jafar Ahmad at-Tahawi (239AH/853CE-321/933) was a jurist, grammarian, philologist, and an outstanding authority on hadith and fiqh. Imam Tahawi drew heavily from the writings of al-Shaybani and Abu Yusuf, whilst codifying and resolving many issues of Hanafi fiqh. He authored over 40 books and works such as Sharh ma`ani al-athar and Mushkil al-athar are regarded as fundamental texts for training students of fiqh. He is regarded as a mujtahid across all schools of thought as shown by his own work on comparative law entitled Ikhtilaaf al-fuqaha.
About the Text
This seminar is based on Imam at-Tahawi’s Al-ʿAqīdah aṭ-Ṭaḥāwiyya. The text is seen as an exposition of Sunni Muslim doctrine. Tahawi’s text essentially contains simple statements defining his creed and advancing arguments to refute the views of particular sects of Islam that have deviated from normative Sunni creed. It comprises 105 key points that list the essential matters in the creed of the Ahlus Sunnah wa`l Jama`ah.
