Description

If the event has sold out: please send any expressions of interest in a repeat session of this course to james@tjcheritage.co.uk.

As part of the RESTORING THE GLORY, REVEALING THE SECRETS project, we will be running a series of FREE workshops exploring the history and archaeology of Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens.

This FREE workshop is your chance to get behind the scenes at Cannon Hall Museum and investigate real unanswered questions in a part of the hall that has never been fully investigated. Cannon Hall is the perfect setting for this course.

The course will be run by professional buildings archaeologists Oliver Jessop and James Thomson. You will learn detective skills to unpick and record the development of a historic building, including research, investigation and survey techniques.

We will start by talking about the archaeology of buildings, break for lunch, and then go down to the cellars, usually closed off the public, to see if we can identify the origins of the hall and how it was expanded. We will examine historic plans and maps of the hall to build up a picture of how it has changed through time, inspect the fabric of the building to look for clues as to the order and

There will also be the chance to see what we have been finding out during investigations of the stables and gardener’s cottage as part of the current conservation works.

You don't need to have any previous knowledge of archaeology; we will learn by talking and teaching. Just wear appropriate clothing including sensible shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dusty.

The course will start at 11 am, meeting at Cannon Hall Museum entrance, and will run until 3 pm with a break for lunch. Refreshments will be provided and participants can either bring their own lunch or purchase it from a food outlet on the day.
