About this event
Priorwood Garden sits within the medieval precinct of Melrose Abbey, Scotland’s first Cistercian abbey established in 1136. The National Trust for Scotland has been caring for Priorwood Garden since 1974. This is our first archaeological excavation in Melrose, and we need your help. The Abbey has undergone many changes before its demise in the 16th century. Including rebuilding after it was burnt down in 1322 and 1385.
The excavation is a chance to learn about the history of Melrose Abbey and Priorwood garden. As well as try out the skills of an archaeologist, searching for evidence of the past and piecing together historic lives from what we might find.
Audience: The dig is open to all (children must be accompanied by an adult) and is accessible via gravelled paths and lawn grass. No experience is necessary, and all equipment will be provided.
Cost: Each participant will excavate their own 1-meter test trench. Each accommodating 2 adults (with up to 2 children). £15 per trench.
Facilities: The dig will be outdoors (so expect muddy hands and knees and potential rain). There will be toilets/handwashing available for participants only.
Date and Time: Thursday 18th - Sunday 21st September 2025. 9.30am -12.30pm & 1.30pm to 4.30pm.
Come along to dig or drop in for a chat about what we find!
