The presentations (starting at 10am)will be from speakers on topics relevant to the local area and to the work of Professors John Coles and John Allen who both sadly passed away this year. They include;

Dr Toby Jones (Newport Museum) on the amazing 15th Century Newport Ship and the fascinating detail that has been discovered about its construction during its analysis and conservation in preparation for the challenge of its reassembly and display.

Professor Aidan O'Sullivan (University College Dublin) on the contribution that experimental archaeology can make to our understanding of past human activity, including in wetland areas.

Professor Stephen Rippon (Exeter University) on the reclamation and exploitation of the Severn wetlands in the Roman period and how that fits in to the wider picture of landscape change at the end of the Roman period.

Dr Alex Bayliss (Historic England)on the work of the 'Times of their Lives' project in Somerset combining palaeoenvironmental and dating analysis to improve our understanding of how Neolithic farmers changed the natural environment and how that relates to the newly refined date ranges for monuments such as causewayed enclosures and long barrows.

Dr Alan Cattell on the hidden landscape history of Avonmouth revealed in over 850 geological cores across the area, the majority of which are not in the public domain.

There will also be a presentation on the heritage projects undertaken as part of the Living Levels landscape project in Gwent

Ticket price includes tea/coffee mid morning (with Danish pastries) and mid afternoon (with biscuits) and buffet lunch. Please email richard.brunning@swheritage.org.uk if you have particular dietary requirements (gluten free, vegetarian, vegan etc) as bespoke options are available.
