Architecture, Activism and Education - Emma Curtin
Emma Curtin is an architect and lecturer at the Liverpool School of Architecture. Whilst her background is in architectural practice, her current efforts to influence the shape of the built environment are though public campaigns and community led projects, rather than more conventional building-focussed-design. She will introduce this work, focussing on two on-going projects.
Library Walk, identified by the 20th Century Society as a unique piece of urban design, was recently closed and built on by Manchester City Council and Ian Simpson Architects. Opposition to this development led to a Public Inquiry where Emma acted as an Interested Party; opposing the loss of the Right of Way through this space.
She is the chair of the Friends of London Road Fire Station. This striking listed building in central Manchester has a rich social history but has been undeveloped and left to decay by its owner’s since 1986. After two years of campaigning by the Friends, it seems the situation is starting to change.
Emma is engaged in the wider policy discussions around these specific projects but they also feed into her teaching. She will talk about her work as an architect trying to influence the shape of the city through activism, rather than design. She will focus on her roles in the campaign to save Library Walk and with the Friends of London Road Fire Station. Relating this to her teaching, she will consider the role of education in preparing graduates to question the status quo and influence positive change.
