Architecture and Sustainability
Event Information
About this Event
RIBA Bath & Bristol branch are delighted to continue their Architecture and series. Launched in 2019, we held three sessions which gained momentum in both popularity and success. Last year we took this series online and continue this year.
The focus on climate change has alerted more of us to the growing concerns about energy consumption and being more sustainable. As architects we want to be able to deliver great design, to client specifications and offer solutions which embrace interesting solutions. These talks are a forum to share ideas and experiences, over a lunch time slot to strengthen the need for more innovative sustainable solutions.
We hope you can join us for Architecture and Sustainability’ and listen to a peer to peer debate about a different perspectives on their chosen topic concerning sustainable design.
About our presenters
Barefoot Architects is an RIBA Chartered Practice run by architects Sam Goss and Rob Hankey.
Barefoot Architects are an energetic practice that holds social and environmental sustainability at the core of all its work. We don't believe in a one-size fits all approach but instead strive to create the best possible outcomes for our clients given the myriad complexities of any given project. We see our role not just as designers but as educators and leaders of change. All projects must start with a deep understanding of people, place, and planet and it is through our work that we strive to make steps toward a sustainable future.
Rob Hankey, one of Barefoot's two directors, joins us to talk about the practice's ethos and working methods with examples from one of their most significant community led Co-housing projects in Bridport, Dorset.
Sam subsequently studied for both his degree and masters at Sheffield University, gaining a dual first class degree in an innovative new course in Architecture and Landscape in 2003. He subsequently worked for leading sustainable architects Architype in London, and Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios in Bath, where as a project architect he delivered award winning Education projects in the Schools, Arts and Higher Education Sector.

ACAN is a network of individuals within architecture and related built environment professions taking action to address the twin crises of climate and ecological breakdown
We are in a state of climate and ecological emergency. There is a compelling body of scientific work indicating our present trajectory will lead to catastrophe if we do not make ambitious and radical changes as a matter of urgency.
Our guest is Sebastian Lomas, ACAN. As Head of Sustainability at Hopkins Architects, Sebastian convenes the practice’s sustainability group which provides specialist insight to design teams and the practice’s responsiveness to the Climate and Ecological Emergencies.Seb is also a coordinator of ACAN’s (Architects Climate Action Network) Embodied Carbon group where he’s co-led the Future Homes Standard and Save Safe Structural Timber campaigns. Having co-authored ‘The Carbon Footprint of Construction Report’ Seb is currently coordinating the latest campaign to introduce embodied carbon regulations in the UK.
