The buildings of Manchester are a lesson in the history of the city. Written in brick and Portland stone, in terracotta and polished granite, you can read the ups and downs of the original modern city right there on the streets.
There are the magnificent cotton warehouses of the Manchester merchant princes in the style of Italian palazzos and the Gothic masterpieces of the Town Hall and John Rylands Library in their revival of romantic medieval fashions.
There are terracotta buildings in the city too, clad with materials that would throw off the smoke of the industrial city, like the Midland Hotel all exuberance and curly decorations. There's Art Deco in Manchester too, if you know where to look.
Come for a fresh look at the city through the buildings that surround us. Those buildings that we walk past without paying heed. They deserve an extra look.
