About this event
Visit Longton Town Hall on Wednesday 17th September to see an exhibition of architecture design projects for Longton, created by university graduates. Drop in any time between 10am and 3pm.
The exhibition features the work of graduates from the BArch (Hons) Architecture course at the University of Staffordshire. The ‘Stoke-on-Trent: Hybrid City’ design project invited students to explore how architecture can act as the catalyst for improving both places and people’s lives. Their proposals focus on an area adjacent to Longton Station, with imagined expanded accommodation for arts organisation, Urban Wilderness CIC, in addition to a variety of other community-focused spaces. The picturesqueness of the Longton skyline, access to the station, proximity to the town centre, and urban layout, were all considerations borne in mind by the students as part of the design process.

The BArch (Hons) Architecture course at the University of Staffordshire is a prescribed/validated course by both the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The course continues to be a conduit for the local and regional community, providing and engaging in dialogue and opportunities related to architecture and the built environment. In recognition of the course’s continuous engagement with the University’s strategy as a Civic University, the course team was awarded the University’s Civic and Community Impact Award in 2024. The course is focused on professional skills that will empower future architects to engage with their community, to take full advantage of Stoke-on-Trent as a location of significant architectural possibilities and to elicit gradual and meaningful change within the city and its hinterland.
With thanks to Urban Wilderness CIC for supporting the project and to Launch It for their support hosting the exhibition in their space at Longton Town Hall.
Urban Wilderness CIC is a community interest company, established in 2018 and based in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, with the mission to bring joy, connection and inspiration to the places they work in. We believe that inclusive access to high-quality art can transform people and places. Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, is now celebrated as an example of how place-based creative interventions can make significant changes personally, environmentally and economically.
Launch It is a charity which aims to level the playing field for enterprising young people from underrepresented communities, enabling them to develop skills and have access to opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach. They provide a two-year support programme including workspace, funding opportunities, mentoring and training.
