About this event

Our Archives on Show events are a chance for us to show you the wide range of material we hold at The London Archives.

Whether you are new to archives and curious to see what we hold, or you are an experienced researcher that wants to learn more, these relaxed events offer a chance for you to see a selection of original materials on a changing monthly theme.

What to expect:

  • Curated display of archival material from our collections - available for you to handle and explore at your own pace.
  • Informal atmosphere with staff on hand to answer queries about items on display.
  • This is a drop-in session - while it doesn't include a formal talk, members of our team will be on hand to answer questions and to discuss the selection of items.
  • Each month we focus on a specific topic, type of record, or theme.

This month's theme: "Records of London's Militia"

From Anglo-Saxon times to 1953, militia units were assembled in Britain's counties to provide military support in times of unrest and war. This event examines the multi-faceted history of London’s militia from the 14th-20th century.

These records explore leadership, government policy and legislation, the design of militia barracks, and documents which provide insight into the lives of militiamen and their families. Amongst a selection of printed works we'll also be displaying 18th century satires offering an insight into contemporary views of militiamen.

The Militia were county or city regiments not part of the national army, established to defend the country in war and times of unrest. The Militia regiments consisted of militiamen who were mustered from local, county or city communities and who were governed and funded at county or city level by commissions of lieutenancy and the City of London Corporation.

Booking Essential: You can book for a one hour drop-in session at 1pm or 2pm.

The London Archives is a free public archive focussing on the history of London, from 1067 to the present day. We preserve and share millions of historical manuscripts, maps, photographs, books which tell the story of the city. You can find us in central London in Clerkenwell, close to Farringdon Station.

It's free to visit and use the archives and many of our exhibitions and events are free to attend. The London Archives is funded and managed by the City of London Corporation. We opened as The London Archives in August 2024 and were previously known as London Metropolitan Archives.

Find us in leafy Clerkenwell, close to Farringdon and Angel tubes, where we look after a vast and unique collection of manuscripts, maps, photos, books and films that tell the story of London, right back to 1067. If you haven't visited an archive before, we're a bit like a library or museum, but with millions of unique historical documents waiting to be explored; you choose what we want to see and we put the history of London in your hands. Not everyone has time to research though, so our exhibitions and events program delves into the archives and presents the fascinating history of the capital for you to enjoy. We're open to everyone, whether you’re visiting an exhibition, joining a history talk or tracing your family history. Browse our program and start discovering London's history today.
