Description

If you are a Key Stage 2 primary educator in the UK please come join us for a fun and free interactive learning session and receive an ₤80 per diem for your travel expenses.

OVERVIEW

The Canada-UK Foundation, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, is creating a giant circumpolar floor map that shows Canada’s geographic extent and diversity for use in schools throughout the UK called Arctic Alive.

The map will focus on the Arctic, teaching British pupils of the vast Canadian North, while also shedding light on British Arctic exploration.

British primary aged students will be able to walk across the Arctic to learn about the rich complexity of its landscape – its people, politics, geology, and ecology.

TEACHING WITH THE MAP

To ensure maximum benefit is derived from the giant maps, a Royal Canadian Geographic

Society-certified teacher will travel to the United Kingdom for this event:

• To train those who will be interacting with the map and lead educational sessions.

• To help prepare additional resources to enhance the value and utility of Arctic Alive.

THE PROGRAMME

Arctic Alive will be shipped throughout the UK to participating schools and organisations bringing hands-and feet‐on Arctic education that falls within the National Curriculum for Geography and the Science for children between the ages of 8-11.

This opportunity will allow students to have a museum-like experience at their school.

Lesson Plans:

  • What is the Arctic?

  • Understanding a circumpolar map

  • Flora and founa of the Canadian Arctic

  • Arctic ice and climate change

  • Exploring the Arctic

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

This is our first trial with Arctic Alive in the UK; therefore, your comments are extremely important to us. What we will need from you during this session are two simple things:

  • your verbal feedback throughout the 1.5 hour trial

  • 100% involvement

If you have any additional questions or require further clarification please email admin@canadaukfoundation.org. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, January 26, 2017.
