Ards and North Down Craft-Tech Programme
Wed, 1 Feb 2017, 09:30 – Thu, 23 Mar 2017, 17:30 GMT
Ards and North Down Borough Council is calling all Craft Producers. Discover what FabLab can do for you.
What is FabLab?
Digital fabrication laboratories (FabLabs) – were set up to inspire people and entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into new products and prototypes by giving them access to a range of advanced digital manufacturing technology.
The idea was conceived by renowned inventor and scientist Professor Neil Gershenfeld at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His idea was a simple one: to provide the environment, skills, advanced materials and technology to make things cheaply and quickly anywhere in the world, and to make this available on a local basis to entrepreneurs, students, artists, small businesses and in fact, anyone who wants to create something new or bespoke.
The Craft-Tech Programme offers Craft Producers operating in the Borough the opportunity to discover, learn and practice new production methods and innovative processes. Be inspired by new technologies (including 3D and Laser printing), design and develop new products, or discover more efficient methods of producing your products to enhance the profitability of your business. The programme is outlined below.
FabLab Showcase - Wednesday 1 February 2016 at Signal Centre
Join us on Wednesday 1 February at Signal for a FabLab Showcase where you can see first-hand demonstrations of the range of equipment available and the potential growth that harnessing such devices may offer. Choose from either the morning or afternoon session:
9.30am-1.00pm FabLab Showcase 1
1.30pm-5.00pm FabLab Showcase 2
Workshop 1 Introduction to Inkscape - Tuesday 7 February 5.30pm-9.00pm at Signal Centre
Inkscape is an open source drawing package that is used in design for a wide range of digital fabrication machines. This package allows the user to design for the laser cutter and vinyl cutter to produce a vast array of elegant and attractive artifacts with pin point accuracy. After attending this workshop you will have the skills needed to design and manufacture anything from a personalised cheeseboard to stunning vinyl wall art in a very short space of time.
Workshop 2 Introduction to Laser Printing - FREE - Wednesday 22 February 5.30pm-9.00pm at Signal Centre
Laser cutting is a process whereby a high powered laser is guided to cut and engrave on a huge variety of materials. Laser cutters are used in every industry from heavy engineering to the world of craft and design. In this workshop you will learn how to interact with the laser cutter and modify the setting so that a huge variety of visually stunning effects can be produced on a variety of different materials.
Workshop 3 Introduction to 3D Printing and Solid Modelling - FREE Tuesday 7 March 5.30pm-9.00pm at Signal Centre
This one day workshop will introduce you to the world of 3D solid modelling. 3D solid modelling is the process of designing an object that can be manufactured using a range of hi-tech manufacturing processes. In this workshop you will be guided through the process of creating a solid object in the virtual environment using parametric design software. This model will then be transferred so that it can be printed on one of our state of the art 3D printers. For anyone who is interested in craft product design, jewellery making, and furniture making this is the workshop for you.
