Event description
Exploring Racial Differences in Therapy & Supervision

About this Event

The key essence of counselling/psychotherapy is to foster a dialogical contact in the therapy room. How do you truly make yourself available to the ‘in-between’ space? Can there be any meaningful therapeutic encounter without exploring issues such as equality, diversity and inclusion?

In this workshop, Faisal will offer experiential space for exploring issues about racial differences that impact our presence as therapists, as supervisors, and more importantly, as fellow human beings. If we believe in a non-dualistic, unified field based human-world view then it is important to remove any pretentious boundary between the world out there (outside the therapy room) and the world in here.

This workshop will consider how we respond to colour in the Therapy / Supervisory space. Specifically, Faisal will explore the following:

  1. The prevalence & impact of ‘colour blindness’
  2. The idea that “when I look at you, I don’t see your colour” and “if it is my job to see beyond colour, then what do I do with my own colour?”
  3. The tendency, if it exists, to see black, rather than white, as the ‘other’.
  4. The concept of colour blindness as a response to internalised shame, relational dissociation or both?
  5. The fact of race as a fixed biological entity or a malleable social construct.

Politics, racism, capitalism, oppression, wars, Brexit and perhaps everything else, are inseparable to therapy and supervisory practice. These issues must be part of our ongoing work both as therapists and supervisors.
