Event Details

Voluntary Action South West Surrey Annual Conference 2019 with the University of Surrey Student Union

For our 2019 conference we will be exploring the difference we make as charities and voluntary sector organisations: are we being as effective as we can be? Can we do more to demonstrate the impact we make? How can we measure the difference we make and where would Surrey be without us!

Join us at the University of Surrey for a day of:

  • Inspiring new ideas
  • Thought-provoking speakers
  • Practical solutions from expert-led workshops
  • Networking opportunities to share experiences with and learn from colleagues
  • Product and service offers from suppliers in our marketplace

To help set the scene and start the day we are very pleased to be welcoming

Jane Hobson: Head of Guidance and Practice, Charity Commission

Following on from Jane we will be hearing from:

Joanna Killian: Chief Executive, Surrey County Council

Charlotte Lamb: New Philanthropy Capital

Jason Gaskell: Surrey Community Action

Shona Easton: Care & Consideration with a Smile

And in the afternoon

Kate Olley: A volunteer’s story

Kate Peters: Community Foundation for Surrey

Ian Handy: University of Surrey Students Union

There will be a choice of workshops all designed to follow through on our conference theme.

We end the day with a choice of either taking part in an unconference discussion session where topics are chosen by delegates, or attending what is sure to be an entertaining and fascinating talk from VASWS David Rose, local historian on Volunteering Down the Ages.

Ian Mclintock CEO & Founder of CEF will be on hand during the breaks to demonstrate the Charity Excellence Framework web based toolkit. A free, very easy to use online toolkit that enables you to increase your impact, financial resources and performance in every area of activity.

Workshop Information

Choose two from:

A: Putting a price on your volunteers' contributions: Catherine Hobson, HTC Consultancy Ltd

The workshop will be interactive and informative, providing an opportunity to explore the totality of your organisation's volunteer contribution. You will work through a robust method for calculating the true contribution and you will learn about ways to use this information for fundraising and demonstrating impact.

B: Setting the strategic plan for health and wellbeing in Guildford Borough: Helen Barnsley, Guildford Borough Council

This workshop will focus on how can we work together to help the people of Guildford Borough live longer healthier lives, focusing on setting the prioritise for the revised Guildford Health and Wellbeing Strategy.

C: Crowdfunding 101: Helen Stanley, Fundraiser

With competition increasing for funding through more traditional streams, charities are increasingly having to find new, innovative ways of raising funds quickly, whilst also raising awareness of the work that they do. Crowdfunding is a unique and rewarding opportunity for charities and Not for Profits to raise funds, increase their profile and make a greater impact on potential donors from across the world.  This workshop will: Explain what crowdfunding is and who/what it is suitable for; explore the different crowdfunding schemes and give you the knowledge to decide which one is right for you and show you the best platforms to use.

D: How to maximise your impact in difficult times: Ian McLintok, CEF founder

Impact is talked about a lot, but what actually is it, how do we measure it, where can we find tools and resources to help us and, most importantly, how do we maximise it when demand is increasing and sourcing income very challenging?

E: Are we making a difference? How do we know?: Liz Lawrence,  independent consultant

It might sound like an obvious question, but is your organisation confident about describing the impact it is making and the outcomes it is delivering? Is the narrative convincing? Is it evidence-based? Does it satisfy the requirements of a range of audiences – from service users to commissioners? Is it fit for tomorrow as well as today?

This workshop is for you if you are looking for answers to these questions.

F: Effective presentations and workshops, no matter the audience: Zöe Franklin, Training Consultant

We inhabit a world as organisations where we often find ourselves needing to 'sell' the work we do in order to get funding, volunteers and airspace. Our ability to present ourselves, our organisations and the work we do as effectively as possible is absolutely crucial in enabling us to remain successful and sustainable. This session will look at how to communicate effectively with different groups of people from your board of trustees, to funders and volunteers in a group presentation/workshop scenario. We will consider how to plan your presentation and how to make different types of sessions truly engaging for your audience.

G: Just Be Yourself - Brilliantly! Nikki Bonner, NLP Practitioner

You don't have to change yourself to be brilliant! Let me help you find what works for you, explore your values and beliefs, and how you can use your 'brilliance' to be effective when helping others and really make a difference. During the session we will look at 'Perceptions' and 'Stepping into the world of others' to open our minds and increase rapport with those around us.

H: Engaging with Student Volunteers Ian Handy, University of Surrey Students Union

How can you get university students involved in your organiation, what are the barriers and what are the top tips? Includes a look at some successful case studies of student volunteering in action.
