Event description

Description

MANDEM has linked up with SOAS to bring you an event that aims to debunk the myths surrounding racism and discrimination in the 21st century.

After the H&M story broke, a lot of people of colour were frustrated by both the incident and the response to the incident. While the image of the young black child reflects severe ignorance on the part of H&M, does it really deserve as much media attention as it received? Are celebrities simply capitalising on these incidents to make themselves appear more socially conscious? Do these incidents distract us from more serious examples of systemic racism?

There have been several cases of public outrage in response to insensitive advertising over the last 12 months and we want to discuss whether these incidents are simply being blown out of proportion or whether they’re reflective of systemic racism at a corporate level. Moreover, is the media attention harming the sales of these companies or in fact boosting them? In the wider context, we will also be discussing why the MANDEM platform was set up, how systemic racism affects the world today and what everyday people can do to tackle it.
