By booking a place on this course you agree to the following terms and conditions:
1. A £50.00 charge will be made to your organisation for non-attendance (if you are unable to attend please email firstname.lastname@example.org with at least 48 hours’ notice).
2. That you will be required to fill out a post training evaluation on the day of the course and then a 3 month follow-up evaluation (this will be emailed to you).
3. That you allow us to use your registration details to send to the training and development teams in the various organisations involved in the project for reporting- we will not use your information for any other purposes- only those that relate to this training.
4. Afternoon only (you should only attend an afternoon session if you have already attended the 1/2 day)
Please make sure you complete the booking form correctly for each attendee making sure that we have the correct names and contact details. If bookings are made in the same name then we will cancel the booking.
No refreshments will be provided so please bring your own or remember to bring money to purchase drinks/ food
This training course is FREE and aimed at all staff in Sussex. MCA code of practice should be considered in every interaction/ decision discussed between a carer and the receiver of care, including interactions by informal carers. Some staff will attend for just the morning (09:15– 12:30). Registered practitioners will need to attend for the whole day (09:15– 17:00). Please see below for examples of who should attend for the full and half day.
This training will bring together staff from across the health economy so you will benefit from a multiagency joint working learning environment. This will help you to get a better understanding on how this relates to your area of work but also gain an understanding of how it impacts on other services too.

1/2 day (09:15 – 12:30) 3 hours CPD
Target audience: All staff to gain an overview and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) [e.g HCAs, administrators, carers]
Following attendance of the morning session (only), staff will have:
1. An awareness of the difference between the Mental Health Act 1983 and the MCA.
2. An understandingof the key principles underlying the MCA.
3. An understanding of how to apply the MCA in practice, including the 2 stage assessment of capacity,
advance decisions to refuse treatment and best interests decision-making with reference to detailed case examples.
4. Delete- renumber points
5. An awareness of the role of the Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA)
6. An introduction to Lasting Powers of Attorney and the Court of Protection
FULL DAY (09:15 – 17:00) 7 hours CPD
Target audience: Health and Social Care professionals regularly involved in MCA assessments of
capacity and the use of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards Authorisations (DoLS) [e.g social workers, doctors, therapists, nurses]
Following attendance of the whole day’s training, staff will have: (all of the above 1/2 day objectives plus….)
7. An awareness of Do Not Attempt CPR orders, End of Life Care and the MCA
8. An understanding of DoLS, including the Supreme Court’s “Acid Test” with reference to detailed case examples.
9. An understanding of how to apply for a DoLS authorisation, including who to contact and the process involved.
10. An introduction to capacity and consent issues in relation to children and young people
