ARGYLL & THE ISLES – MINI TOURISM SUMMITS - AUTUMN 2017

In 2013 AITC conducted a road show across the region gleaning insights from each area on what tourism meant to everyone and initiating support for pan Argyll marketing.

Since then we have worked closely with each of our local marketing group members to help capacity build and develop an incredible range of online content and information for each area and under the umbrella of exploreargyll.co.uk. We have been pursuing World Host Destination accreditation with 397 individuals trained and the target being to get 200 businesses accredited. This year we launched the innovative Wild About Argyll campaign working with Mark Beaumont, aimed at repositioning Argyll as Scotland’s Adventure Coast and raising awareness of all that is on offer for a younger more active audience.

We have been building a close relationship with the city of Glasgow and next year plan to roll out a further campaign promoting our unique proximity and diversity of offer.

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

AITC has now secured a 3 year funding package from HIE and the Council which is allowing us to focus on three priorities

  • Adventure & Nature,
  • Food & Drink and
  • Events & Festivals.

We plan to focus on product development and to work with those businesses that are keen to grow, collaborate, reach new markets and offer new and enhanced experiences.

This is in the context of 2020 being announced as Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Water. We are arguably one of the best placed regions in Scotland to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.

But the planning has to start now.

We have two years to develop a more effective collaborative approach in providing a consistent, cohesive and comprehensive presentation of the range and quality of experiences on offer in Argyll and the Isles and making it easy for visitors to find, learn about and most importantly book a trip here. To start this process we need local input.

We want to know what you consider to be the defining qualities of your area as distinct from other areas of Argyll and the Isles, and also what unites the region.

What activity is on offer in each individual area of Argyll under our three themes? What are the key strengths and where are the gaps? What ambition is there for growth and new ideas to add to the mix?

Mega trend research has flagged up that tourism as we have known it is changing quite radically - so we will explore what this could mean in each local area … what opportunities exist and how ready we are to embrace this new era?

We will consider how well businesses are engaging with their local DMO and if change is needed to get more businesses involved. Five years have proven that collaboration is definitely the name of the game in Argyll & the Isles so if key businesses are not getting involved in your local area what needs to happen to address that?

According to government statistics, this region has been comprehensively out performing Scotland as whole in terms of growth in tourism - and of all the regions in Scotland, in Argyll tourism is the most represented sector employing over 6500 people. How does this look at a local level - and what barriers are preventing even further growth?

The mini summit will explore all these topics, encouraging open discussion and seeking to set a new sense of ambition. The output from each mini summit will be a local action plan for the period 2018-2020.

Each summit will take place over a half day during which there will be important updates on new and exciting activity in each area and also the opportunity to explore some of the issues your area is facing and work to identify some solutions and ways forward.

These events are free and open to anyone involved in tourism.

Benmore Cafe are very kindly sponsoring a working lunch so places must be booked in advance.
