ARGYLL & THE ISLES – MINI TOURISM SUMMITS - AUTUMN 2017

In 2013 AITC conducted a road show across the region gleaning insights from each area on what tourism meant to everyone and initiating support for pan Argyll marketing. Since then we have worked closely with each local DMO to help capacity build and develop an incredible range of online content and information for each area and under the umbrella of exploreargyll.co.uk. We have been pursuing World Host Destination accreditation with 397 individuals trained and the target being to get 200 businesses accredited. This year we launched the innovative Wild About Argyll campaign working with Mark Beaumont, aimed at repositioning Argyll as Scotland’s Adventure Coast and raising awareness of all that is on offer for a younger more active audience. We have been building a close relationship with the city of Glasgow and next year plan to roll out a further campaign promoting our unique proximity and diversity of offer.

AITC has now secured a 3 year funding package from HIE and the Council which is allowing us to focus on three priorities – Adventure & Nature, Food & Drink and Events & Festivals. We plan to focus on product development and to work with those businesses that are keen to grow, collaborate, reach new markets and offer new and enhanced experiences. We are also seeking to engage more and more people in World Host accreditation and developing our digital skills.

With 2020 being Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Water we – as Scotland’s Adventure Coast – are arguably the best region in Scotland to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity. But the planning has to start now. We have two years to develop a more effective collaborative approach in providing a consistent, cohesive and comprehensive presentation of the range and quality of experiences on offer in Argyll and the Isles and making it easy for visitors to find, learn about and most importantly book a trip here.

To start this process we need your input. We know there is a lot of activity on offer in each individual area of Argyll and we want to capture all this - and then focus on what you see as your area’s defining qualities – then consider if we are celebrating these enough at the local level and could we do more as part of our Wild About Argyll campaign activity? What do you see as the early priorities in your area? What do you think could make all the difference locally and collectively? This will then help us allocate the resources we have to be most effective.

Over the course of a half day we will explore a number of themes with you and also provide important updates on new and exciting activity in each area and at a pan Argyll level. We will consider how tourism as we have known it is set to change and consider how ready we are to embrace this new era.

We will consider how well businesses are engaging with their local DMO and if change is needed to get more businesses involved. Five years have proven that collaboration is definitely the name of the game in Argyll & the Isles so if key businesses are not getting involved in your local area what needs to happen to address that? This region has been comprehensively out performing Scotland as whole in terms of growth in tourism recently and of all the regions in Scotland, in Argyll tourism is the most represented sector employing over 6500 people. This industry therefore possibly more than any has scope to reverse the economic challenges being faced in Argyll. And we will achieve so much more by working together.

These events are free and open to anyone involved in tourism.

Mount Stuart and Bute Kitchen are very kindly sponsoring a working lunch so places must be booked in advance.
