About this event

  • 4 hours

T his is one of the most beautiful and unusual walks in the country. On a clear day, with the seabirds overhead, and nothing but the shimmering sands between you and the distant headlands of Grange and Arnside, you might feel you are going back in time to when the monks of Furness Abbey guided travellers between the counties of Lancashire and Westmoreland.

You can park at Arnside, or at Grange over Sands, and get the train to Arnside. Toilets are located on the lower promenade (postcode LA5 0HD)and cost 30p. There are no toilets on the walk until we reach Grange Prom.

Our meeting point is in front of the Albion Pub on the slipway. Please arrive at least an hour early, which should give you time to find a parking space and sign in with Wild North Trust. Exact numbers on the walk are required to give to the coastguard.

D ogs are allowed on the walk at a fee of £5, please give this to the charity organisers to hand to the Guide. Dogs must be under control at all times and nobody can leave the walk to search for a dog.

P lease note: no bikes, wheelchairs, prams or unaccompanied children are allowed. You need to be fit enough to walk at least 8 miles.

T he walk may take around 3-4 hours. Once we have left the headland and are on the sand, there will be wet areas to cross, especially the River Kent, where you can get wet up to the thighs, so w e recommend you wear comfortable trainers or walking boots, which you can take off when crossing the river. Bring a hot or cold drink, suncream, basic first aid such as plasters, a snack for the journey, and a hat. Dress for the weather, even in summer it may be cold in the bay.

O nce we land at Grange Over Sands, you can then return by train to Arnside.
