Art and Maths – exploring connections
Tuesday 7th March 2017 1.30-4.30pm Whitechapel Gallery
1.15 - 1.30 Arrival, registration & refreshments
1.30 - 2.45 Art and Maths – exploring connections
The focus this term, at the request of those who came to the last meeting in November, is Art and Maths. The aim of the session is to explore ways in which mathematics and art can support one another – how learning in maths can be enhanced through art and design processes and vice versa and how a little more curriculum time might be found for art through the judicious pairing of the two subjects. It will be partly led by Judy Grahame, a primary consultant currently working with Tower Hamlets schools and by you, the teachers attending, bringing along your ideas and suggestions for art and maths linked activities. A practical session will suggest some simple collage and printmaking activities centred around pattern, tessellation and symmetry, adaptable to different age and stages. It will also include a look at some artists whose exploration of mathematical shapes and/or concepts might inspire creative activity and at works of art helpful in developing children’s mathematical language. The session should provide practical strategies that teachers can immediately adapt for their own classes.
2.45 – 3.00 Tea / coffee
3.00 - 3.45 Practical Workshop (continued)
In this session there will also be an opportunity to share work that you have brought with you from your own school. We hope that you will bring along anything you’d like to share, especially if it addresses the art and maths theme. Those of you who came to last term’s session, please do bring along any ‘little books’ you may have made with your children.
