British war artists played a vital role in documenting, interpreting and responding to the events of the twentieth century. This six-part series offers a thoughtful introduction to how artists captured the realities and emotional impact of war through powerful, often deeply personal imagery.

What will this course cover?

You’ll explore how artists balanced truth and symbolism, shaped public understanding, and found beauty and meaning amid conflict.

Delve into the work of Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, Sir William Orpen, and Laura Knight. We'll discuss these artists, and their paintings, in a supportive and creative environment.

What will I get out of this course?

You’ll develop and hone your critical thinking skills through close analysis of each artist and their work. Discover how to enjoy these British masters in the context of their historical experience, and discuss the cultural, political and social influences which shaped their art.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

The course is suitable for all, those who have a familiarity with the subject and those who are coming to it for the first time.

What do I need to bring with me?

You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.
