What will this course cover?

This four-session course offers an accessible introduction to Impressionism and the artists who shaped it—Monet, Manet, Degas, and Berthe Morisot. Together we will examine how these painters challenged academic conventions, experimented with new approaches to light and color, and captured the changing rhythms of modern life in nineteenth-century France. Through close looking and discussion, students will gain a clearer understanding of each artist’s contribution to the movement and to the broader development of modern art.

What will I get out of this course?

You will gain a deeper understanding of Impressionist painting, the history and contexts that surrounded the movement, and the techniques used to create it. Join tutor Debra Collis and a community of likeminded learners in this four week course.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

No prior knowledge of art history is required—just curiosity and an interest in exploring how these influential works came to redefine artistic practice.

What do I need to bring with me?

You do not need to bring any equipment, but you may wish to bring a pen and notepad to jot down your thoughts.
