What will this course cover?

This course explores the vibrant visual culture of Nineteenth-Century England, examining how painting, architecture, design and imagery shaped society during a time of social transformation. Through case studies of key artists, movements and everyday visual practices, you will develop a critical eye for how art both influenced and was influenced by its historical context.

What will I get out of this course?

You will gain an appreciation of how art and culture intersect with history, politics and life in Victorian England. Improve your skills in visual analysis of fine art and understand how themes such as industrialization, class and gender were represented in the arts.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

This course is an entry level art appreciation course. No prior knowledge of art history is required, just a willingness to engage with the discussion.

What do I need to bring with me?

No equipment is needed, but an open mind and enjoyment of the arts. You may wish to bring a notepad and pen to jot down your reflections.
