More information: John was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne to a working class family. As a teenager, he was conscripted into the army and sent to Christmas Island (now Kiribati) where the British government were carrying out nuclear tests. In order to test the impact of the new weapons, the service personell were given no protective clothing but were, instead, told to turn away from the bomb and use their hands to cover their faces. There were over 20,000 such soldiers sent to Kiribati and many of them died prematurely of leukemia and related illnesses as did John.
