About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Ages 18+

In this class we’ll be exploring independent galleries in Holborn. You’ll be guided through group discussions and independent drawing tasks. You'll have the opportunity to meet new people, have interesting discussions, gain confidence in drawing and make meaningful connections with artworks and people.

In this session we'll look at the boundary between art and design. Craft, Function, Domesticity, Textiles, Vernacular Style: we'll explore how artists reclaim these genres which are often dismissed as outside of 'fine art'. Encountering artworks which elevate industrially produced materials alongside meticulously hand-crafted objects, we'll ask questions about authenticity, cultural context, beauty, functionality and living with objects.

Connecting Curious Minds runs classes designed to give those with curious minds confidence in accessing London’s rich art scene. We use drawing as a way of engaging more deeply with artworks and we use group discussions to make connections between artworks, wider culture and personal histories. CCM classes create a warm setting for interesting discussions to arise, helping you to connect more meaningfully with artworks and others with curious minds.

You don't need to be confident at drawing or talking about art to join, the discussions and drawing tasks are friendly and open, we are interested in hearing the personal connections you make to the artworks and ideas. Participants on CCM classes are a diverse mix of artists, creatives and and those looking to reconnect with their long-lost creativity.

Please be aware that there will be limited opportunites to sit down and there will be up to 20 minutes of walking between galleries. To participate in this class you must be aged 18 or over.

Testimonials from past participants

“Today’s class gave me the opportunity to find time for myself, relax and try to focus on something new and a skill that I’d like learn. Ellie is brilliant, passionate and extremely calm which makes her classes very enjoyable.”

“I found the class both relaxing and engaging. It was a nice change from the usual rush of daily life to take some time out and really focus on an artwork and my response to it. Ellie was encouraging without being intrusive and lead the class in a very natural way.”

“As an art lover, it was a delightful experience that allowed me to connect with art on a much deeper level than usual. Drawing a piece requires so much attention and presence—it’s incredibly grounding! A beautiful antidote to the hyperstimulated rhythm of our modern world.”

No! In our classes, we use drawing as a tool to help you focus on a specific artwork. It's less about the outcome of the drawing and more about using it as a tool for reflection, concentration and discovery.

Do I need to be confident talking about art to join in?

Nope! The discussions are friendly, open and respectful. No prior knowledge of the artwork is needed, we're more interested in hearing what the work brings up for you and the connections you make to it on the day.
