Art Deco Holborn - trams, tiles and tailoring

By Jane's London Walks

Overview

An almost circular guided walk around Holborn looking at a marvellous mix of interwar architecture

We start our walk near Holborn station. The exact meeting place will be clearly described in words via email after purchase (please see more info in the FAQs below).

......................................

This architectural appreciation tour visits a cross-section of interwar buildings that today all come under the retrospctive term of 'Art Deco' – constructed in a forward-thinking era when new products and innovations, such as reinforced concrete and elevators, made it possible to build bigger, cleaner and faster.

We'll visit a variety of impressive buildings all hiding in plain view* all of which perfectly highlight and contrast the varied designs of the Jazz Age and the 1930s.

We will look at buildings slathered in gorgeous tiles, others that are sleek and modernist, plus brick and stone-clad façades, built for technology, advertising, retail and finance, and trades of various kinds.

We'll also talk about transport – disued services in the form of double-decker trams and a tube station that closed on1933.

*There are bound to be exclamations of "oh I never noticed that before!"

  • 2hrs / 1.25 miles approx / ends on Kingsway

My guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends. The walks and talks I offer are all on subjects that intrigue me and each one highlights a different facet of my personality. I am particularly interested in the architecture of our ever-changing streets and the little details on and above them. For more information, please visit www.janeslondonwalks.com
