Event description

Description

On this walk we'll look at some marvellous 'statement' architecture constructed in the 1930s during a design period that later came to be identified as 'Art Deco'.

The modernist architecture of the Jazz Age era with its clean geometric lines, simplicity, functionality and minimal decorative enhancement was designed to impress and inspire – a kind of "understated showing-off" pointing to a positive bright future – a complete change from the fussiness of the Victorian and Edwardian periods with their over-embellishments, swirls and flourishes.

Many different kinds of businesses were keen to keep up with the zeitgeist. In Holloway there are some excellent examples of modernism and deco style all hiding in plain view at almost at every junction – we'll look at places of entertainment, commerce, business, health as well as some residential properties.

The walk starts near the Holloway Odeon and finishes a few minutes' walk from Holloway Road tube station.

The exact meet-up location will be given on your booking confirmation and ticket which will be sent via email.

Jane ParkerMy guiding style is inclusive, open and friendly. I design and research every tour myself – in fact, the research never ends.
The walking tours I offer are all on subjects I am genuinely interested in – each highlights a different facet of my personality. I am specifically interested in the changing face of our streets over time and how those changes have affected local communities and the social history of an area.
