Art Deco in the West End Walking Tour
Sun 5 March 2017, 14:00 – 16:00 GMT
Leisure and Entertainment under Neon Lights!
Architecture in the Machine Age
From towering cinemas and garages to iconic flagship stores, Art Deco in the West End explores the rich architectural history of the area around Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus and (and parts of) Soho under the prism of 1920s and 1930s leisure and entertainment.
Featuring an eclectic mix of austere and glamourous building, the West End’s opulent Art Deco heritage charts the birth of the automobile industry, the stratospheric rise of Hollywood as well as the development of modern(ist) retail spaces. From ‘ocean liner’ curves to sharp angles, this tour is a must for all fans of Jazz Age architecture and also includes a short visit inside one of London’s most secret Deco interiors.
From busy squares to little alleyways, our route throughout the West End will not only take us back in time but also allow us to explore a ‘newly-discovered’ urban village filled with chic boutiques where you will hear tales about a Victorian celebrity chef and the Windmill ‘We Never Closed’ theatre as well as the fabulous Windmill Girls.
This tour is aimed at seasoned Londoners and tourists who are looking to explore the West End from an architectural perspective. An ideal gift for history buffs as well as fans of all things ‘Art Deco’, this walk can also be booked as a private tour for birthdays, weddings or any other special occasions.
The meeting point for this tour is on Bear Street just around the corner from the Bear and Staff pub (see the map below). The closest transport links are Charing Cross Tube Station (Bakerloo Line and Northern Line) and Leicester Square Tube Station (Northern Line and Piccadilly Line). Lasting about two hours, the tour finishes close by Piccadilly Circus Tube Station (Bakerloo Line and Piccadilly Line).
The tour costs £8 (regular) / £7 (students and seniors) per person and tickets are available for purchase on Eventbrite. All pricings for private group tours are available upon request.
