Raising funds to tackle the Malawian food crisis
Currently, Southern Africa is gripped by a terrible and worsening food crisis. The UN recently reported that over 30 million people already rely on food aid alone, and this figure is expected to grow by a further 20 million by the end of this year.
In the middle of this region is Malawi, the poorest country in the world and considered the worst affected by this crisis. After successive years of drought, crop yields have plummeted, food reserves have disappeared and the rains have failed again. In April, the government finally declared a National State of Disaster. By August, around 6.5 million people were in need food aid. The Malawian government predicts that by the end of the year, this will rise to 8 million people – or half of the population.
