Art Fund Lecture: Michalengelo and Sebastiano
Wed 26 April 2017, 18:45 – 20:30 BST
This lecture will focus on Michelangelo, and his extraordinary creative relationship with another great Renaissance artist, Sebastiano del Piombo, and will coincide with the National Gallery London’s major exhibition (15 March to 25 June 2017), which has already been described as a “block buster”.
In 1511, when Michelangelo was finishing work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, he met Sebastiano in Rome and the artists became friends and collaborated on several works. Featured in the exhibition will be exceptional loans including Michelangelo’s Risen Christ from Bassano Romano, the Pietà for San Francesco in Viterbo and The Raising of Lazarus, painted for the Cathedral of Narbonne, one of the foundational works in the National Gallery’s Collection. Works that precede their meeting will also be included, as well as examples of their extensive, intimate correspondence, providing new insight into their personal and creative lives.
Gayna Pelham lectures extensively at the National Gallery, London and major UK galleries and museums, and has recently given two Art Fund talks in London.
